Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the evaluation and treatment of mental, emotional, and developmental disorders.

After completion of medical school, a residency in psychiatry requires 4-5 years of addtional training.  In this area and in this group, most psychiatrists focus on the medical aspects of treatment. Psychotherapy is usually recommended as an important component of treatment as is provided by psychologists and therapists.  The skillful and careful use of modern medications to treat mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders is an important responsibility for psychiatrists at this time.  Some psychiatrists in this group are assisted by a nurse or nurse practitioner.
